20th September 1862: Sam is astonished to find himself in Virginia in the middle of the American Civil War, as he leaps into his own great-grandfather, Union infantry officer Captain John Beckett. Shot by the enemy, Sam is rescued by a family of escaped slaves and left in the safety of a nearby barn; the following morning he is found by Livvy Covington, an attractive but formidable widow who takes him prisoner at gunpoint and promises to hand him over to the militia for hanging. Al finally arrives on the scene and informs Sam that his radical leap is the result of a genetic field transference, and that Livvy is destined to become Sam’s great-grandmother – somehow Sam must find a way to win Livvy over and fan the flames of romance, otherwise he will never be born. When the Confederates arrive Livvy surprises Sam by choosing not to give him away, instead explaining to Lieutenant Montgomery that he is her cousin Aubrey. As Sam recuperates he discovers that Livvy and her manservant, Isaac, are harbouring a secret: the farm is the site of an underground railroad smuggling escaped slaves to safety. Not only that, but one of Isaac’s descendants will be none other than Martin Luther King…
